"Both the Wegovy injection and the Wegovy pill have shown early signs of success when it comes to weight loss. Here at Well, it’s important for us to give our patients options so that they can choose a treatment that suits them, without compromising on results."
Wegovy is a prescription weight-management treatment that contains the active ingredient semaglutide. It is suitable for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or for adults who are overweight and have weight-related health conditions, depending on clinical assessment.
It is used alongside changes to diet and physical activity, rather than as a standalone fix. For some patients, it can be an effective part of a wider weight-management plan, but side effects of the Wegovy pill, along with suitability, dose changes, and ongoing use should always be reviewed with a qualified prescriber.
The main difference between Wegovy pills and Wegovy injectable pens is how the medicine is taken. The pill is taken once a day and comes with a different dosing schedule. The injectable pen is used once a week and is generally more flexible around food, water, and time of day.
For UK patients, availability is the first practical difference. The Wegovy pill is going to be available in the UK in the coming days, following recent approval. Meanwhile, Wegovy injectable pens are already available privately through regulated providers and may also be available on the NHS for patients who meet the relevant criteria. Access still depends on clinical review, eligibility, supply, and the route you use to obtain treatment.
| Wegovy oral pills | Wegovy injectable pens | |
|---|---|---|
| Frequency | Once per day. | Once per week. |
| Dosing schedule | Starts at 1.5mg once daily and is increased gradually. The recommended maintenance dose is 25mg once daily. | Starts at 0.25mg once weekly and is increased gradually. Standard maintenance dosing has commonly been 1.7mg or 2.4mg once weekly, with a newer 7.2mg pen approved for certain adult patients with obesity. |
| Food and water rules | Strict. It must be taken in the morning on an empty stomach with water only. You then need to wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking, or taking other oral medication. | More flexible. It can be injected at any time of day, with or without food. |
| Absorption | More sensitive to timing. Oral semaglutide uses an absorption enhancer called SNAC and is mainly absorbed in the stomach, so food, drink, and other medicines can interfere with how much is absorbed. | More predictable. The injection bypasses the digestive system and delivers semaglutide under the skin, which is why it does not need the same fasting routine. |
| Storage | Stored at room temperature in the original packaging and kept away from moisture. | Stored in a refrigerator until use. Pens may usually be kept at room temperature for a limited time, so follow the instructions supplied with your prescription. |
The cost comparison is not yet available because only the injectable Wegovy pen is currently available in the UK. Private prices can vary by provider, dose, consultation model, and whether follow-up support is included. As the dose increases, the monthly cost usually increases as well.
Once the Wegovy pill becomes available, the practical comparison will be between the total monthly cost, the strength (dose) supplied, the review process, and how well each format fits each patient’s routine.
For patients using the NHS route, access is based on eligibility and clinical need rather than a direct retail price comparison. A GP or specialist weight-management service can advise whether Wegovy is appropriate and whether other treatment options should be considered.
The Wegovy pill may appeal to people who are uncomfortable with needles, but it comes with a stricter daily routine. It needs to be taken at the right time, with water only, and before food, drink, or other oral medicines. That makes consistency important.
The Wegovy injectable pen may suit people who prefer a once-weekly schedule and more flexibility around meals. It still requires a correct injection process, dose escalation, and monitoring for side effects, but it avoids the daily fasting rules that come with the tablet.
Neither format should be chosen purely on convenience. Wegovy is a prescription treatment, and the decision should be made after a proper clinical review that looks at BMI, weight-related health conditions, medical history, current medication, side-effect risk, and whether another weight-management option may be more appropriate.
