Advanced diabetes testing

Take control of your health with our quick, convenient in-pharmacy service

A diabetes screening is a simple way to help identify your risk of developing type 2 diabetes, or if your blood sugar levels are higher than normal.
Diabetes is a condition that can cause your blood glucose (sugar) levels to spike. There are two main types of diabetes, and understanding the differences can help you manage your health with confidence:

Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in childhood, but it can develop at any age. It isn’t preventable and happens when the body can't produce insulin.

Type 2 diabetes is more common and can be influenced by factors like age, ethnicity, and whether you’re overweight or living with obesity. For some, type 2 diabetes can be delayed, prevented, or managed through lifestyle changes and appropriate treatment.*
How our diabetes-testing service works
Our quick, convenient service helps provide peace of mind, and is available at selected Well pharmacies for just £39. Here's what you can expect from the service:

Quick health questionnaire

You'll answer a few quick questions to help us get to know you, your health history and your lifestyle.

Diabetes screening

We'll carry out a quick finger-prick test as an initial blood sugar check, followed by a more advanced HbA1c test which looks at your average glucose levels over the past 2-3 months. This combination presents us with a detailed picture of your diabetes risk, with collective analysis taking around 6 minutes.

Results & follow-up

One of our trained pharmacists will run through your results there and then, along with practical advice on diet, nutrition and exercise, and any recommended next steps. You'll then be booked in for a follow-up in 3 months' time.

How to get your diabetes test
You can book an appointment for your diabetes test online, or simply pop into a participating Well pharmacy at your convenience and request a diabetes test.
Why should you get a diabetes check?
A diabetes screening helps you identify how 'at risk' of developing type 2 diabetes you are. When combined with lifestyle choices such as healthy eating, exercise and weight management, this can often prevent or delay your development of type 2 diabetes as well as other related metabolic conditions, such as a stroke or kidney issues.

Identifying these things early means you can find the right support quickly, and follow up with a GP where needed.
Common symptoms of diabetes:
  • Frequent urination
  • Excessive thirst
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Fatigue or low energy
  • Blurred vision
  • Slow-healing wounds
  • Increased hunger

What is the advanced diabetes testing service?
Our Advanced Diabetes Testing Service provides a simple finger-prick blood test that measures your random glucose level & HbA1c level, which reflects your average blood glucose levels over the past 2–3 months. The test can help identify whether you have diabetes, are at risk of diabetes, or have pre-diabetes.
Who should get a diabetes test?
This diabetes test is ideal for people who:
  • Are aged 40+
  • Are overweight or living with obesity
  • Take weight management medication
  • Have high cholesterol
  • Have a history of diabetes in the family
  • Often feel tired
  • Are experiencing symptoms of diabetes
  • Are interested in understanding your diabetes risk levels to take early action
  • Do I need to fast before the diabetes test?
No. Unlike some blood tests, fasting isn't required for a HbA1c test. You can eat and drink as normal before your appointment.
How long does the diabetes test take, and when will I get my results?
The entire appointment typically takes around 10–15 minutes. The finger-prick sample is analysed in the pharmacy, and results are available within around 6 minutes. A trained healthcare professional will explain your results and provide advice on any next steps.
What happens if my result is high after my diabetes test?
If your HbA1c result is raised, your pharmacist will discuss the result with you and provide advice on lifestyle changes that might help improve your blood glucose levels. Where appropriate, we might recommend that you make an appointment with your GP for further assessment or confirmatory testing.
Is the diabetes test used to diagnose diabetes?
This service can help identify people who might have pre-diabetes or diabetes, but a diagnosis should always be confirmed by your GP or another healthcare professional. Your pharmacist will explain your results and advise you on the most appropriate next steps.
