Choosing a weight-loss pill can be confusing, especially now that more oral GLP-1 treatments are being discussed alongside established options. Wegovy pills are one of the most talked-about new treatments because they contain semaglutide, the same active ingredient as Wegovy injections, but they are taken by mouth instead of by injection.
We're proud to offer the Weight Management Service across all our pharmacies across the UK and Online. Our pharmacists are expertly trained to support you to make the right decision for your weight loss goals.
The real question is not simply whether Wegovy pills are “better” than other weight-loss tablets. It is how they compare with other currently available options, what each medicine does, and which treatment may be suitable depending on your health, lifestyle, and prescribing criteria. Different treatment options are suitable for different individuals and its important to discuss this with your pharmacist during your consultation.
The main licensed options at this time are Orlistat, Mysimba, and Alli. Below, we’re going to show how they all stack up side by side.
| Weight-loss pill | How it works |
|---|---|
| Wegovy pill | Contains semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist that helps reduce appetite and increase fullness. |
| Orlistat / Xenical | Reduces how much fat your body absorbs from food. |
| Alli | Lower-dose orlistat that reduces fat absorption from food. |
| Mysimba | Contains naltrexone and bupropion, which act on areas of the brain involved in appetite and cravings. |
Wegovy pills contain semaglutide. Semaglutide mimics the action of GLP-1, a hormone involved in appetite, digestion, and blood sugar control. For weight loss, semaglutide can help you feel fuller for longer, reduce appetite, and slow how quickly food leaves the stomach. This can make it easier to eat less and maintain a reduced-calorie diet.
The Wegovy pill is taken once daily. The dose starts low and increases gradually until the 25mg daily maintenance dose is reached. The tablet also has strict dosing rules: it must be taken in the morning on an empty stomach with water only, and you must wait before eating, drinking, or taking other oral medicines.
Different weight-loss pills work in different ways. The “right” choice depends on your medical history, eating habits, side-effect risks, and whether your pharmacist thinks the medicine is suitable for you.
Orlistat, including Xenical and Alli, works in the gut. It reduces how much fat your body absorbs from food. Because of this, it needs to be taken with meals that contain fat. Side effects are often linked to the digestive system, especially if you eat a high-fat meal.
Mysimba works differently. It contains naltrexone and bupropion, which act on parts of the brain involved in appetite and cravings. It may be useful for some people who struggle with hunger or food cravings, but it is not suitable for everyone and needs a prescription.
Wegovy pills and Orlistat work in very different ways. Wegovy acts on appetite and fullness, while Orlistat acts in the digestive system by reducing fat absorption from food.
| Wegovy pill | Orlistat / Xenical / Alli | |
|---|---|---|
| Main feature | Reduces appetite and increases fullness | Reduces fat absorption from food |
| How is it taken | Once per day | Usually taken with meals containing fat |
| Diet requirements | Used with a reduced-calorie diet and physical activity | Works best with a lower-fat diet |
| Main drawback | Strict empty-stomach dosing rules | Digestive side effects can be worse after high-fat meals |
Wegovy pills and Mysimba both target appetite, but they do so in different ways. Wegovy is a GLP-1 medicine. Mysimba combines naltrexone and bupropion, which affect brain pathways involved in appetite and cravings.
| Wegovy pill | Mysimba | |
|---|---|---|
| Main feature | Reduces appetite and increases fullness | Acts on appetite and craving pathways in the brain |
| How is it taken | Once per day | Daily tablets, with the dose increased gradually |
| Suitability | Used with a reduced-calorie diet and physical activity | Not suitable for some people, including those with certain seizure, blood pressure, mental health, or medicine-interaction risks |
| Main drawback | Strict empty-stomach dosing rules | More restrictions and interactions than some other options |
Wegovy pills have shown strong weight-loss results in clinical trials, but it is too early to say that they are “better” than every other weight-loss pill. The better question is whether a medicine is available, licensed for your situation, safe for you, and can be used correctly.
The right weight-loss pill depends on your health, weight, medical history, current medicines, side-effect risks, and whether you meet the criteria for treatment.
Orlistat may be suitable if you want an established option and can follow a lower-fat diet. It may be less suitable if you struggle with digestive side effects or cannot adapt your diet.
Mysimba may be suitable if appetite and cravings are a major issue, but it has important restrictions and is not suitable for everyone. Your doctor will need to check your blood pressure, medical history, and medication interactions.
Rybelsus may be prescribed if you have type 2 diabetes and a doctor thinks it is appropriate, but it should not be used as a general weight-loss pill.
Wegovy pills may be a suitable option if you want semaglutide treatment without injections, but they still need to be weighed against other factors. Side-effects of the Wegovy pill, your health, preferences and how easily you can follow the daily dosing rules are all things to take into consideration.
