Wegovy pills are an oral form of semaglutide used for weight management. They contain the same active ingredient as Wegovy injectable pens, but are taken once a day by mouth instead of once a week by injection.
In clinical trials, the Wegovy pill has shown meaningful weight loss results when used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Below, we’ll look at how Wegovy pills work, how much weight people may lose, how they are taken, and what to keep in mind when comparing them with other weight-loss treatments.
Wegovy pills contain semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist. GLP-1 is a hormone involved in appetite, digestion, and blood sugar regulation. Semaglutide works by mimicking some of these effects in the body.
For weight loss, semaglutide can help by reducing appetite, helping you feel fuller for longer, and slowing how quickly food leaves the stomach. This can make it easier to eat less and maintain a reduced-calorie diet.
Wegovy pills are intended to be used alongside lifestyle changes, including a balanced diet, increased physical activity, and long-term habits that support weight management. They are not designed to replace diet and exercise, and results can vary from person to person.
| Wegovy oral pills | |
|---|---|
| Frequency | Once per day |
| Dosing schedule | Starts at 1.5mg once daily, increasing gradually to a 25mg maintenance dose |
| Food and water rules | Must be taken in the morning on an empty stomach with water only. Wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking, or taking other oral medication. |
| Absorption | Oral semaglutide has strict dosing rules because food, drink, and other medicines can affect how well it is absorbed. |
| Storage | Store at room temperature in the original packaging, away from moisture. |
In clinical trials, Wegovy pills produced significant weight loss in adults with obesity or overweight and at least one weight-related health condition.
The key figure to know is that oral semaglutide 25mg once daily was associated with average weight loss in the mid-teens over roughly 64 weeks in trial settings. Novo Nordisk reported a mean weight loss of 16.6% in the OASIS 4 trial when treatment was adhered to.
That does not mean everyone who takes Wegovy pills will lose exactly 16.6% of their body weight. Some people may lose more, while others may lose less. Your results can depend on your starting weight, how well you tolerate the medicine, whether you reach the maintenance dose, your diet, your activity levels, and how consistently you take the tablet correctly.
A more practical expectation would be that Wegovy pills can support substantial weight loss for eligible adults, but the final outcome depends heavily on the individual and on continued lifestyle support.
Some people may notice appetite changes within the first few weeks of treatment. However, the full weight-loss effect usually takes longer.
Wegovy pills are started at a low dose and increased gradually. This helps reduce the risk of gastrointestinal side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, or constipation. Because the maintenance dose is reached after around three months, many people should expect the most noticeable weight-loss effects to develop after the dose has been built up and continued over time.
The dosing schedule used in prescribing information is:
| Dose | When it is taken |
|---|---|
| 1.5mg once daily | Days 1–30 |
| 4mg once daily | Days 31–60 |
| 9mg once daily | Days 61–90 |
| 25mg once daily | Day 91 onwards |
Wegovy pills and Wegovy injections both contain semaglutide, but they are not taken in the same way and are not dose-for-dose equivalents.
The injectable version is taken once a week, while the oral version is taken once a day and has stricter administration rules, because it needs to be absorbed through the stomach.
Clinical trial data suggests that Wegovy pills can produce weight loss in a similar broad range to established Wegovy injection results, particularly when taken correctly and continued long enough. However, direct comparisons should be treated carefully. Trial designs, patient groups, adherence levels, and doses can differ, so it is better to say that Wegovy pills appear to be a strong oral option rather than automatically “better” or “the same” as the injection.
In other words, for some people, the pill may be more appealing because it avoids injections. For others, the weekly pen may be easier because it does not require a strict daily morning routine.
Wegovy pills must be taken exactly as directed because incorrect use can reduce absorption and may affect results. Take it on an empty stomach, even before your coffee. Take your tablet first thing in the morning, right when you wake up after an 8-hour fast. Why? If the tablet gets mixed up with any food mass, it’ll prevent the SNAC coating from touching the stomach wall. Your stomach fires up its enzymes, and the semaglutide will be broken down
To summarise, Wegovy tablets should be taken:
- Once daily
- In the morning, following an 8-hour fast
- On an empty stomach
- With water only
- With no more than 120ml of water
- Swallowed whole
- At least 30 minutes before eating, drinking, or taking other oral medicines
You should not split, crush, chew, or dissolve the tablet. Taking it with food, coffee, juice, or other medicines too soon after dosing may reduce how much semaglutide your body absorbs.
This is one of the main practical differences between Wegovy pills and Wegovy injections. The pill avoids needles, but it requires a strict daily routine.
Wegovy pills have been assessed in clinical trials and approved, but “safe” does not mean risk-free. Like all prescription medicines, semaglutide can cause side effects and may not be suitable for everyone.
The most common Wegovy pill side effects are gastrointestinal, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, stomach pain, indigestion, and bloating. These side effects are one reason the dose is increased gradually rather than starting immediately at the full maintenance dose. Wegovy may not be suitable for people with certain medical histories, and it should only be used after a clinician has checked whether it is appropriate.
