Mounjaro is a once-weekly weight loss injection that contains tirzepatide. It can help reduce appetite, support fullness, and make it easier to manage your weight when used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

At Well Pharmacy, treatment starts from £149, subject to an online consultation and pharmacist approval. If Mounjaro is suitable for you, our clinical team will guide you through how to use your pen, how your dose may change over time, and what to expect during treatment.

What is Mounjaro?

Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a prescription medicine licensed in the UK for weight management in adults with obesity or adults who are overweight and have at least one weight-related health condition.

It works by acting on two hormone pathways, GLP-1 and GIP, which are involved in appetite, fullness, digestion, and blood sugar control. By helping you feel fuller for longer and reducing hunger, Mounjaro can make it easier to follow a healthier eating plan.

How effective is Mounjaro for weight loss?

Mounjaro can support significant weight loss when used consistently with diet and physical activity. In a major clinical trial, adults taking tirzepatide lost more weight than those taking placebo, with the highest dose linked to average body weight reductions of around 20.9% after 72 weeks.

Your result may be higher or lower depending on your starting weight, dose, diet, activity level, side effects, and how consistently you use treatment. Mounjaro is not a quick fix, and it works best as part of a long-term weight management plan.

Who can use Mounjaro?

Mounjaro may be suitable if you are an adult and have:

  • A BMI of 30 or above
  • A BMI of 27 to 30 and at least one weight-related health condition, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea, or cardiovascular disease

Mounjaro may not be suitable if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, planning a pregnancy, under 18, allergic to tirzepatide, or have certain medical conditions. During your consultation, our pharmacy team will check your health history, current medicines, BMI, and treatment goals before deciding whether Mounjaro is appropriate.

How do you take Mounjaro?

There might not be a Mounjaro pill, but Mounjaro comes in a no-nonsense injectable form. Mounjaro is taken once a week using a pre-filled injection pen, and for best results you should try to use it on the same day each week. Your starting dose is usually 2.5mg once weekly for 4 weeks. Your prescriber may then increase your dose gradually, depending on your progress and how well you tolerate treatment. Do not change your dose unless your prescriber tells you to.

Choose your injection site

You can inject your pen into your tummy, arm or thigh. Make sure to change the site regularly to avoid injury or bruising. You should also use an alcohol swab to clean the injection site.

Prepare your pen

Take off the cap and press it against your chosen injection site. Unlock the pen by twisting it. If it's your first time, speak to your prescriber for guidance on how to use your injection pen.

Inject your dose

When you are ready, press and hold the top of the pen. You will hear 2 clicks, 1 at the start of the injection and 1 at the end. Wait 10 seconds to hear both clicks.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose and it has been 4 days or less, take it as soon as you remember. Then take your next dose on your usual scheduled day.

If more than 4 days have passed, skip the missed dose and take your next dose as normal. It's better to miss a dose than to double up.

Mounjaro side effects

Like all medicines, Mounjaro can cause side effects. The most common are digestive symptoms, especially when starting treatment or increasing the dose. Common side effects may include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation
  • Stomach pain
  • Indigestion
  • Reduced appetite
  • Injection site reactions

Most side effects are mild to moderate and improve over time, but some people may need dose adjustments or a different treatment. Seek medical advice urgently if you develop severe or persistent stomach pain, signs of dehydration, or symptoms of an allergic reaction.

Can I use contraception while taking Mounjaro?

Tell your pharmacist if you use oral contraception, including the combined pill or progestogen-only pill. Mounjaro may reduce how well oral contraceptives are absorbed when you first start treatment or after a dose increase.

You may be advised to switch to a non-oral contraceptive method or add a barrier method such as condoms for 4 weeks after starting Mounjaro and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.

Mounjaro should not be used during pregnancy or while trying to become pregnant.
