Is there a Mounjaro pill?
Everything you need to know.
If you are interested in weight loss treatments, chances are you have come across Wegovy or Mounjaro. Both started in injectable form, but the former, Wegovy, is now available as an oral pill, which is causing people to wonder if Mounjaro, too, will release a pill. Here’s everything you need to know about whether or not a Mounjaro pill is on the horizon.
| Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) | Wegovy (Semaglutide) | |
|---|---|---|
| Administration | Injection only - no pill | Injection or oral pill (released July 2026) |
| Active Ingredient | Tirzepatide | Semaglutide |
| Mechanism | Dual GIP & GLP-1 agonist | GLP-1 agonist |
| Frequency | Once-weekly | Once-weekly injection / daily pill |
| Can I take orally? | No - stomach acid and enzymes will break it down before entering the bloodstream | Yes - SNAC coating shields it from stomach acid and breakdown |
Mounjaro’s active ingredient is called tirzepatide, which is only approved via injection. The new Wegovy pill was approved earlier this year and consists of a SNAC coating which helps reach the blood stream without being broken down by enzymes and stomach acid before it can get there. Because of this, it's important to adhere to the administration recommendations around fasting and intake of other food and drink when taking the Wegovy pill.
Mounjaro is a once-weekly self-administered injection, belonging to a class of medications that mimic specific hormones in your body (GLP-1 and GIP) that play a key role in how your brain regulates hunger and fullness. By mimicking these signals, Mounjaro helps to:
- Reduce appetite: You feel less hungry so can stick to a calorie-controlled diet easier.
- Increase satiety: You feel fuller for longer after eating, aiding with portion control.
- Regulate blood sugar: It improves your body’s response to insulin and helps manage glucose levels more effectively.
Mounjaro is a prescription-only medication, and so is not suitable for everyone. To determine if Mounjaro or another weight management treatment is appropriate for you, you can start your weight loss journey with Well at any time by booking a consultation. This ensures that the medication is safe based on your specific medical history, BMI, and overall health.
In the UK, Mounjaro is available as a KwikPen injection. The dosages include 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg, and 15mg. Each contains tirzepatide and is a solution for injection in a pre-filled pen. The Mounjaro injection pen contains four fixed doses, with one dose taken weekly. Besides that, Mounjaro is not available in the UK as a tablet, capsule, oral liquid, dissolvable strip, patch, or spray.
You should not stop Mounjaro or switch to another weight loss medicine without speaking to your pharmacist first.
Some people prefer tablets because they don’t like injections, and that is fine. However, oral medicines aren’t automatically safer or more suitable. They can have different dosing instructions, side effects, suitability criteria, and expected results.
If you’re finding Mounjaro difficult to use, or you would prefer a non-injectable weight loss treatment, a healthcare professional can talk you through the available options. They can also check whether any side effects, dose issues, or practical concerns can be managed before changing treatment.
Remember, we strongly advise against purchasing “oral Mounjaro” or “tirzepatide pills” from unauthorized online sources. As mentioned, there is no oral version of Mounjaro, and so anything advertised as such should be avoided. These products would not have been clinically tested or approved by the MHRA, the FDA, or any other medical regulator.
Are you ready to explore your options?
Can you get Mounjaro as a tablet?
No. Mounjaro is not currently available as a tablet in the UK. It is available as a once-weekly injection.
Is oral tirzepatide the same as Mounjaro?
No. Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, but there is no licensed oral Mounjaro or oral tirzepatide tablet currently available in the UK for weight loss.
Will Mounjaro ever come as a pill?
There is currently no approved Mounjaro pill in the UK. Future medicines and formulations may change, but you should only use treatments that have been approved and prescribed through a regulated pharmacy.
Can I take a weight loss pill instead of Mounjaro injections?
Possibly, but it depends on your health, BMI, medical history, current medicines, side effect risk, and treatment goals. A clinician can help you compare suitable options.
