Meet Amie
Digital Clinical Pharmacist

Hi, I’m Amie and I’m a Digital Clinical Pharmacist for Well Pharmacy. I’ve been qualified for 13 years as a pharmacist and done many different roles in pharmacy.

What do you do in your role as Digital Clinical Pharmacist?

I currently work in Well’s Digital Pharmacy for the Online clinic. My role involves offering services and advice through to supporting patients with different

I work alongside a fantastic team where we are uniquely placed to offer services remotely allowing patients flexibility and the opportunity to access healthcare through their homes.

I have done a Diploma in Pharmacy, I am an Independent Prescriber and I work part time in a GP Practice as a Clinical Pharmacist.

I thoroughly enjoy being a Pharmacist and the opportunities it offers alongside the impact I can have on my on my patients and the healthcare sector.

What do you love most about Pharmacy and being a Pharmacist?

I love the amount of variety pharmacy provides. I have been lucky enough to have a few varied roles along my years as a pharmacist and I feel pharmacy allows you to be the best version of yourself in the area you most enjoy.

For me being a pharmacist is about patient care and seeing the difference I make daily in my patients lives gives me immense satisfaction. As a pharmacist I believe you really do have the potential to make a real difference in the health care sector.

What has been your Pharmacist career journey to date?

Since qualifying I have worked across a number of different areas in pharmacy and have thoroughly enjoyed it!

I started off my pharmacy career as a summer placement student with Co-operative Pharmacy in both my 2nd and 3rd year of my pharmacy degree. I then completed my pre-registration training year with Co-operative Pharmacy going onto to take a relief role in the Midlands area after passing as a pharmacist. After 9 months as a Relief Manager, an opportunity came up to be a Branch Manager.

I took on the role and managed a branch for about 10 years. It was a great experience, challenging at times and always building on my skills and pharmacy knowledge. During my time as a Branch Manager our branch was one of the top 3 pharmacies on the league table and I won the Manager of the year award for the Division in 2018.

During my time as a Branch Manager, I was also a pre-registration tutor to 5 trainee pharmacists. During COVID I worked as part of the ARRS team providing remote pharmacist support to GP practices. This saw the start of my career as a Clinical Pharmacist in GP practice. With a passion for education, when an opportunity came up to be the Foundation Pharmacist Training Lead and work with the People team, I took up the role and did this for 15 months alongside 2 days a week in GP practice.

I was responsible for the pastoral care of the Well trainee pharmacists as well as overseeing the Foundation Pharmacist Programme and it’s content. This was an educational experience where I was constantly learning and building on my clinical skills and knowledge.

I now work as one of the Digital Pharmacists for Well’s Digital team, providing services for the Online clinic and using my independent prescribing qualification to offer private prescriptions and services. I continue working 2 days a week in GP practice.

I love working in different roles as a pharmacist and tapping into different skills.

How do you support patients and provide high quality care?

We have robust processes as part of the Digital Team to ensure that all our patients get the best service even remotely.

I personally ensure the patient has a name to refer to and whether doing a phone consultation or video consultation, they feel listened to, validated and know who they are speaking to.

A lot of our patients return as they know who their ‘digital pharmacist’ is and are happy with the service provided.

What advice would you give to any Pharmacists or Pharmacy students?
Pharmacy is constantly changing and it is an exciting time ahead with pharmacy students qualifying as Independent prescribers in the next few years and being able to offer more services and showcase their skills. Take any learning opportunity and explore the world of pharmacy to see what you most enjoy and where you can utilise your skills and offer your best.
What's next for you in your career development?
Following completion of a Diploma and my Independent Prescribing qualification I am looking at becoming an Advanced Clinical Practitioner.
