Mounjaro has become one of the most popular weight loss medications used in the UK. It relies on an ingredient called tirzepatide to encourage lower blood sugars, reduced cravings and a feeling of fullness between meals. This action means that it can help you lose weight sustainably over time.2
Yes, it’s quite normal for any medication to cause side effects. The most commonly reported for Mounjaro are feelings of sickness (nausea), diarrhoea and vomiting.2
These symptoms usually occur within the first few weeks of taking the medicine and get better as your body gets used to it. This is why you will first be prescribed a low dose of Mounjaro, then slowly moved onto stronger doses of it if required.
Although headaches are not as common as other Mounjaro side effects, they can happen. They affect up to 1 in 10 users of the medication and can range from mild to severe.3
There may be other reasons why you are experiencing headaches as they are a symptom of lots of different conditions.
However, if you’ve been approved for treatment, keep note of any side effects you’re having. You’ll be able to discuss them with your pharmacist who can give you advice on treating them.
Most headaches can be managed at home with pain killers. But you should see a GP or call 111 if you have:
- Jaw pain when eating
- Blurred or double vision
- A sore scalp
- Other symptoms, such as numbness or weakness in the arms or legs.5
Call 999 if you have:
- Sudden problems speaking or remembering things
- Loss of vision
- Drowsiness or confusion
- A very high temperature and symptoms of meningitis
- Redness in the white part of your eye.5
