What is tirzepatide?

Tirzepatide was first developed to treat the symptoms of type 2 diabetes.1 Since then, its ability to help reduce BMI has encouraged it to be branded as weight loss medication. Mounjaro and Zepbound are some examples of this drug.2,3

It works by copying the action of two different hormones – GLP-1 and GIP. This allows it to lower your blood sugar levels, make you feel fuller for longer and reduce any cravings you may have.1

Are Mounjaro and Zepbound different?

There isn’t a significant difference between the two medicines. Mounjaro is only available on prescription in the UK to treat obesity in adults over the age of 18. You have to have a BMI of 30 or more to be eligible to use it.2

Zepbound is designed for the same purpose, but it was first launched in the USA as a treatment for type 2 diabetes.2

Both medicines come in pen injectors and must be taken once every week.2,3
