How does mole screening work?

Start with a 10 minute consultation

Book an appointment online or head in store to get a mole screening check with one of our trained colleagues. You'll need to answer a few questions and then, our pharmacists will take medical-grade images of your mole with a specialised tool.

Get your moles clinically reviewed

Your images are securely uploaded through the Map My Mole app and reviewed remotely by a UK consultant dermatologist. Your report is returned to you within 24 to 48 hours, typically much faster than NHS pathways.

Receive dermatologist-approved results

You'll receive a report from one of our dermatologists. It will tell you whether your mole is benign (harmless) or needs further attention. If you need a refferal for further treatment, they will let you know privately.

Why you should have your moles checked

Early detection of abnormal moles can save lives

Most people have moles, but if you've noticed changes to yours, it's important to have them checked.

Changes to the shape, colour or texture of your moles could require further medical attention.

That's why early detection matters.

Booking a mole check appointment is quick and simple and helps you receive specialist advice and support when you need it.

Your questions on mole screening answered by experts
What is mole screening?

Mole screening service is a fast and convenient mole checking service available at selected Well Pharmacy branches. A trained member of the team takes medical-grade, close-up photos of your mole using a smartphone and a dermatoscope (a handheld, non-invasive magnifying tool).

These images are then sent securely through the Map My Mole app to be reviewed by UK consultant dermatologists. The team will give you your results, which are typically returned within 48 hours.

How is my mole screening data handled?

Your images and information are uploaded securely through the Map My Mole app. No photos remain on the device after your appointment. Data is stored in line with UK GDPR and ICO requirements.

How can I tell if the service isn't right for me?

Most people can use the Map My Mole, mole screening service, but there are a few situations where we advise booking a GP appointment or seeking urgent care instead.

You should not use the service if:

  • The mole or lesion is bleeding heavily, very painful, or showing signs of infection. If your mole is red, swelling, producing pus or feels tender, you should speak to your GP about it.
  • You have a rapidly spreading rash, fever, or feel unwell
  • You have been advised by a healthcare professional to seek urgent GP or hospital review for this mole. For example, you won’t be able to use the service if your GP has put you on a two-week wait referral.
  • The mole is in an area where safe imaging is not possible like your genitals or inside your mouth
  • The lesion is too large or too sensitive to be examined safely in a pharmacy setting. Your pharmacist will let you know if this is the case.
  • If you are worried about more than 3 new or changing moles it would be advisable to have an in-person mole check . Your pharmacy team will let you know if this applies.
  • You are under 16 and do not have a parent or guardian with you
