What is earwax?

Earwax is a sticky substance produced in the ear canal.

It is designed to trap bacteria, dust and small objects from entering your inner ear and causing damage.

If you have too much earwax, it can lead to a blockage that might cause pain or irritation. Microsuction can be used to remove excess earwax from your ears. It gently removes build-up from your ears through a suction tube.

Adding a few drops of olive oil to your affected ear a week before your appointment is recommended. It helps to loosen any hard wax so that it can be removed quickly.

Earwax removal (if needed)

Within 30 minutes, you can have excess earwax removed using our microsuction service. It's quick, painless and costs £50.

Signs you may have hearing loss

One in three adults in the UK is deaf, has hearing loss or tinnitus. You may benefit from a hearing check if you:

  • Often ask people to repeat themselves
  • Struggle to hear conversations in noisy places
  • Turn the TV volume up higher than others prefer
  • Find it difficult to hear on the phone
  • Experience ringing in your ears (tinnitus)

How much does the earwax removal service cost?

The service is completed in two parts - an ear check-up and the earwax removal service. The ear check-up is free and it's £50 for the earwax removal. You only need to pay for and attend an earwax removal appointment if you need one.

Who can use the service?

Our hearing check and earwax removal service is only available to over 18s and people experiencing symptoms of earwax build-up or hearing changes.

The service won't be right for you if:

  • An ear infection
  • Severe ear pain
  • Recent ear surgery
What is microsuction?

Microsuction is the safest and most effective way to remove earwax. It works by inserting a low-pressure suction probe into the ear. The probe will be controlled by one of our trained clinicians who will be wearing a microscope that will allow them to look clearly into the ear canal to remove the wax.

This procedure is painless and does not involve water being squirted into your ear canal, as syringing does.

It is recommended to use olive oil ear drops such as Well Pharmaceuticals Olive Oil Ear Drops a week before your appointment. Speak to our pharmacist for further advice.

Are there any side effects?

Microsuction is safe but you may experience some temporary changes such as:

  • A cold feeling in your ears
  • Increased sensitivity to sounds
  • Disorientation or dizziness
  • Throbbing or an ache in your ears.

These symptoms will go away within 24 hours as your ears adjust. We advise to keep your ears dry for 24 hours.

How often should I get this treatment?

There is a free follow-up appointment available, if necessary, this will help us understand whether you’ll need to come back every 3 or 6 months for check-ups.
