Covonia Original Bronchial Balsam is a pharmacy‑only cough syrup used to relieve dry cough, throat and chest irritation, and mild congestion associated with colds or bronchitis.
Active Ingredients
Per 5 ml:
- Dextromethorphan hydrobromide – 7.5 mg (cough suppressant)
- Levomenthol (menthol) – 2.5 mg (cooling, mild decongestant)
- Also contains ethanol (≈0.18% vol), glycerol, sucrose (~3 g/5 ml)
Who Can Use It and How
- For adults and children aged 12 and over.
- Dosage: Take 2 × 5 ml spoonfuls, repeat every 4 hours if needed; do not exceed maximum dosage.
Warnings and Precautions
- Not for those under 12, pregnant, breastfeeding, or with liver issues without medical advice.
- May cause drowsiness or dizziness; do not drive or operate machinery if affected.
- Interactions: Avoid if taking other dextromethorphan‑containing medicines, MAO inhibitors, SSRIs - risk of serotonin syndrome, especially in combination with CYP2D6 inhibitors.
- Dependency risk: Prolonged or repeated use may lead to tolerance, psychological dependence, or withdrawal symptoms.
- Symptom persistence: Consult a doctor if cough lasts more than a few days or worsens.
Side Effects
Possible side effects include:
- Common/mild: drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, constipation, stomach discomfort.
- Dependence/withdrawal: palpitations, irritability, vomiting, diarrhoea, restlessness (in cases of prolonged use).
