Information about NHS prescriptions

Take the stress out of your prescriptions
We have been dispensing prescriptions from our pharmacies for over 70 years, so it is safe to say we know a thing or two about NHS prescriptions.
We've broken down everything you need to know in this helpful guide, from UK prescription costs and nominating a pharmacy to how we work with the NHS. So, whether it's your first prescription or your 100th, we're here to support you.
In England, the standard price of an NHS prescription is £9.90 per item. The prescription cost in other parts of the UK varies, as if you live in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, you don't have to pay for your prescriptions.
You may also be eligible for free prescriptions depending on your circumstances or your age.
In England, you are entitled to free prescriptions if you are:
- Under the age of 16
- 16–18 years old and in full-time education
- Over 60 years old
- You are pregnant or have had a baby in the last 12 months
- You have certain long-term health conditions and have a valid medical exemption certificate
- You hold a valid war pension exemption certificate
- If you or your partner receive benefits, such as income support or income-based job seekers allowance
In specific circumstances, you are entitled to free prescriptions in England if:
Typically, a prescription lasts six months. This may be different if you have been prescribed a controlled drug. You can always ask your pharmacist or doctor if you are unsure.
In England, prescriptions are issued electronically. This means you can pick up your prescription from any pharmacy of your choice. You can specify this with your doctor or sign up with Well, and we can deliver your NHS prescription for free.
Prescriptions usually only take a couple of days to prepare. If you choose Well, you can download our app and get notifications when your prescription is either out for delivery or ready to collect.
If you have run out of medication or need a prescription urgently, you should call 111 or your GP for the quickest response.
Private prescription costs in the UK vary depending on the pharmacy you choose and the medication you are requesting. Many online pharmacies offer differing pricing structures and administrative fees.
A pharmacy will normally hold your filled prescription for 10-14 days. However, we would advise picking up your prescription as soon as possible to avoid delays in receiving your medication.
To get a new prescription, you first need a consultation with a GP or another qualified prescriber. They will assess your health needs and, if appropriate, issue a prescription. You can then bring this prescription to any Well Pharmacy or use our online prescription service to have it dispensed.
- You can nominate a Well Pharmacy in one of three ways:
- Online: Log in to your Well Pharmacy account and select your preferred pharmacy.
- In store: Speak to a member of our team at any Well Pharmacy.
- Through the NHS app: You can nominate your preferred pharmacy within the NHS App.
When you order your prescription with Well, you can choose whether to have your medication delivered to your home or made available for picking up at your local Well pharmacy with our Click and Collect service.
Yes, you can. If you've been issued a one-off prescription to treat a specific medical condition for a short amount of time, such as a course of antibiotics or pain relief for an injury, we can dispense this for you at your nearest Well pharmacy or using our online prescription service.
