What is a sore throat?

A sore throat can happen when you have an infection. Sore throats are usually nothing to worry about and can go away by themselves after a few days.

The main symptoms of a sore throat include:

  • Pain and redness in the throat
  • An occasional cough
  • A scratchy feeling in your throat
  • Bad breath
  • Swollen glands in your neck.

How can I get treatment if I think I have a sore throat?

If you have a sore throat, you can access Pharmacy First for support. Pharmacy First allows you to get advice and treatment at your local pharmacy rather than having to arrange a GP appointment.

All you need to do is speak to a member of our team and ask for help with your symptoms. One of our pharmacists will discuss your health with you in a private consultation room and prescribe medicines if you need them.

Pharmacy First is free. You’ll only need to pay for your prescription if you don’t have an existing exemption.

Who can access Pharmacy First services for sinusitis?

Anyone over the age of 5 can access Pharmacy First.

If your child is under the age of 5 and experiencing the symptoms of a sore throat, you should arrange an appointment with your GP or call 111 for further advice and support.
