Description

Bacterial vaginosis is a common type of vaginal inflammation caused by the overgrowth of bacteria called gardnerella vaginalis naturally found in the vagina. When this happens the pH of the vagina increases.

It can affect women of any age but is most common in women of reproductive age. Common symptoms include a thin grey, white or green vaginal discharge, a “fishy” vaginal odour, vaginal itching, or burning during urination. Half of all women with bacterial vaginosis do not have any symptoms.

Bacterial vaginosis can be sexually transmitted. If you’ve recently been intimate with a new partner you might want to test for common sexually transmitted diseases or attend a sexual health clinic.

Other possible causes of an increased vaginal pH are candida (thrush) and trichomoniasis. Further testing may be needed in the event of a positive result.

How to use

  1. Collect the vaginal secretions with the swab - 2 in/5 cm inside the vagina for about 10 seconds
  2. Apply the head swab onto pH area of the test panel at least 5 times
  3. Read the results immediately while the measurement zone is still wet

Full product preparation and usage is included in product box on IFU (instructions for use)

FAQ

What is the Vaginal pH Rapid Test Panel (Vaginal Swab) used for?

This is a self-test used to measure the pH level in a vaginal swab. It aids in diagnosing bacterial vaginosis, a common type of vaginal infection.

What does a normal vaginal pH level mean?

A normal vaginal pH level ranges from 3.8 to 4.5. This acidic environment helps protect the vagina from infections as most disease-causing bacteria can't thrive in such conditions.

How does the test work?

The test uses a pH paper that changes colour when it comes in contact with the vaginal swab. The colour corresponds to a particular pH level on the colour scale provided with the test unit.

When shouldn't I use the test?

You should avoid using the test 72 hours after using vaginal preparations (like contraceptive creams and antifungal agents), 48 hours after sexual intercourse or douching, and within 5 days of your period ending.

How do I use the test?

After washing your hands, take the swab from the package and insert it into your vagina for about 10 seconds to moisten it with vaginal secretions. Then apply the swab to the pH area of the test panel and read the result immediately.

What does a normal result look like?

If your vaginal pH level is within the normal range (3.8-4.4), the colour of the indicator on the test panel will be Yellow-Green.

What does an abnormal result mean?

If your pH level is over 4.4 or under 3.8, it's outside the normal range. The indicator color will be Green-Blue for pH over 4.4 and Bright Yellow for pH under 3.8. This may indicate a vaginal infection and you should consult with a healthcare professional.

Can menopausal women use this test?

Yes, but be aware that menopausal women may have an elevated vaginal pH and could receive an abnormal result even if they're not suffering from an infection.

Does this test detect sexually transmitted diseases?

No, this test is not designed to detect sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV, chlamydia, herpes, gonorrhoea, or syphilis.

How accurate is this test?

Clinical trials have shown this test to have 94.4% specificity and 98.9% sensitivity, with an overall accuracy of 98.1%.

Remember to always consult with a healthcare professional if you have any concerns or questions about your test results.
